The short answer
All four use LFP cells and carry 10-year warranties. The right one depends on your home more than the badge:
- Want to start small and grow? Sigenergy or GoodWe ESA, which stack in modules.
- Replacing an old inverter on a budget? Sungrow, with a hybrid inverter and SBR battery.
- Want it outside? GoodWe ESA, Sigenergy and Powerwall 3 are sealed units. Sungrow’s SBR suits a garage or sheltered wall.
- Driving a Tesla? Powerwall 3 pairs with the Tesla Wall Connector and the Tesla app.
Side by side
| Battery | How it is built | Sizes | Backup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sigenergy SigenStor | Inverter and battery in one stack | Modules from 5 kWh, to about 48 kWh | With a backup gateway | Starting small and growing; optional DC EV charging |
| Sungrow SBR | Hybrid inverter plus a battery stack | 9.6 to 25.6 kWh, in 3.2 kWh steps | Backup output on the hybrid inverter | Value, and replacing an old inverter |
| GoodWe ESA | Inverter and battery in one sealed unit | 5 or 8 kWh modules, to 48 kWh | Whole home, up to 63 A, built in | Outdoor installs and whole-home backup |
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | Battery with a solar inverter built in | 13.5 kWh per unit | With a Tesla backup gateway or switch | Tesla drivers, and Tesla app users |
Size matters more than brand
The federal discount pays the full rate on the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. A battery bigger than you can fill each evening costs more and saves little. We size from your bills and how you use power after dark. How the battery discount works.
Backup is a design choice
No battery keeps the lights on by default. Each needs the right hardware and wiring, and big loads like ducted air con, ovens and EV chargers decide what is realistic. Ask any installer what will run in a blackout, in writing.
Warranties, read properly
Battery warranties usually end at 10 years or when the battery reaches a minimum remaining capacity or an energy throughput cap, whichever comes first. You get the warranty document with every quote, so you can compare like for like.
Sigenergy’s 2025 recall
In November 2025 Sigenergy recalled some single-phase 8, 10 and 12 kW energy controllers over an AC plug that can overheat. Owners get a free replacement controller and two extra years of warranty. What owners should do.
